Going to four days on/three days off has been the best career decision I’ve ever made. Makes day trips easy as can be, and overnighters much more doable.
Getting a motorcycle has been the best vehicular decision I’ve ever made. And I’m not talking about the very real fun factor. I’m fairly shy, and the bike does a lot of the leg work in terms of meeting people and getting willing copilots!
Here are some of the better shots from today.
Mt Rainier in the background, Nochas Peak to the right, and lake Tipco(?) down below
Have I mentioned my love for this tank bag? It’s big enough to carry gear for two people on a day trip, without resorting to saddle bags (kills aerodynamics) or backpacks (kills jacket ventilation)
White River. I’d be curious to know what mineral profile gives it such a milky appearance
My new secret camp spot. There’s a small sandy beach just large enough for a pair of sleeping pads
Zoom in! You’re looking at hundreds of tadpoles along the water’s edge
While a bit late in the season, the wildflower fields are still blooming
Besides the original NSX, this is the only Honda I’ve ever experienced that made me feeeeeeeeel things
I wanted yellow, but this red has grown on me

Those pics are beautiful! I’ve worked that same schedule before and it was wonderful.
One bit of advice about camping on a river bank is to be careful, water rises fast on rivers and can be from rain or snowmelt a long way away from where you are that causes it.

I believe the term is rock flour from a glacier or river with a lot of aggitation to grind rocks

Tank bags are great - if large/
stuffed
enough, you can just lie on top of them on long rides. Completely takes weight off your wrists.

Man, you guys pay for it with all the rain but the PNW is just spectacularly beautiful.

June - September is perfect. The rest.... Well. I've slowly trained myself to enjoy miserable, cold and rainy hikes

Wife and I live in Calgary but were both raised in the mountains. Sometimes living “on the flat” just kills me a little inside.

I miss my 4-day week from the University, but it is the only thing I really miss. I plan to try to get to a 4 day schedule at the flood commission someday.

Sounds like this area, except between september and june it isn’t rainy, it’s a frozen miserable hellscape... and we have 0% of the nice-landscapes

When are we going moto camping?

You will learn to enjoy miserable, cold, and rainy motorcycle rides too

Wow. Every single one of those looks like a cinematic screensaver. Absolutely stunning.

Would camping a Thursday or Friday night work for you?
![]() 08/15/2020 at 18:48 |

A Friday is a maybe, depends how far I'd have to go after work.

If you can find a cool place to set up camp I’ll ride down there on a Friday morning and meet you after work!

Cool! I'll start looking!

Decay said he would probably join. Better find an ADV!

Saddle Mountain is an option, especially if you’re interested in a hike at the same time. Sunrise from summit is pretty. It’s paved the whole way, decent spacing between sites, and has toilets.
N 45°57.782', W 123°41.414'
It would be easy enough to find dirt from there if we want to play around, not sure you’re into that with the VFR though. Also right there is the coast.

Ohhhh that looks nice. I really like the idea of a hike with ocean views, I haven’t experienced that yet.
Looks like the hike is closed for the rest of year... Think we could get through on bike ?

Oh poop! I have no idea if we could still get in. I’ll keep looking for other spots.
Do you want to do this Friday?

I’m busy the next two weekends, but s eptember 11th forward works for me!
Are you bringing the Honda? You should bring the Honda
![]() 08/21/2020 at 22:14 |

Yup! Are you going to get an adv by then so we can play in the dirt?
![]() 08/21/2020 at 22:29 |
|
.... I can take pictures of you two enjoying off-road shenanigans
I’m really curious how a midsized adv would feel verses my honda for *on-road* stuff. gotta start testing bikes

Decay and I are pretty certain you would love a cb500x. Slower, obviously, but light, and handling should be great since it's more road focused. And 70mpg! Throw some decent tires on and they're supposed to be surprisingly decent on dirt.

Meanwhile here its:
May to October - 0% chance of rain, 100% chance of hot
October to May - some rain on occasion, still hot during the day, usually cooler at night
